The
Wyoming Disability Awareness Walk began in 2005 in Casper and
was originally called the "Building Bridges of Opportunity Awareness
Walk". Approximately 100-150 people participated and the
event was held in the gym at the Casper Recreation Center.
The event officially became the "Wyoming Disability
Awareness Walk" in 2007 when the event expanded into
Rock Springs, Worland and Cody, Wyoming. By 2010, the walk had
evolved into a statewide event by expanding into Fremont County and
brought in over 1,000 people. In 2011, the walk expanded into
three new communities and saw approximately 1,500 walkers statewide. Over
the past four years, the Wyoming Disability Awareness Walk has brought
in about $90,000 in sponsorships and pledges for community projects
such as, wheelchair accessible playground equipment, a state-of-the-art
pool lift, push-button doors and ice sleds to assure accessible recreational
opportunities to people with disabilities. Many have also been
able to enjoy vacations, concerts,
sporting events, etc. with funds raised throughout the years at the
Wyoming Disability Awareness Walk.
2012 marks our 8th annual event and we are expanding
once again and will include the communities of Riverton, Sheridan,
Newcastle, Gillette & Cheyenne by partnering with other community
service providers in those areas. Community
Entry Services is hosting the walk in Riverton, Magic
City Enterprises is hosting the walk in Cheyenne and the walks
in Sheridan, Gillette and Newcastle are hosted by RENEW. Our
goal for 2012 is to bring in 2000 walkers and we hope you will help
us do it.
EVERY walker gets a FREE T-shirt, and if they have a
team of 5 or more their team will receive a personalized banner with
their team name or company logo.
