Success Stories for People with Brain Injuries

  Success Story - Amanda W.

Amanda is such an inspiration to everyone at NOWCAP Services.  Amanda came to us in 2005, 4 years after she had been in a car accident that was so severe, it’s a miracle she survived.  She was only nineteen at the time of the accident and was starting to think about getting out on her own and dreaming about what she would do with her life.  The accident left Amanda in the hospital for three months.  She was then placed in a nursing home for two months, followed by a two month stay at Craig Rehabilitation Hospital in Englewood, CO.  For part of the time, she was in a coma.  She was unable to close her mouth and couldn’t speak or walk.  The impact of the accident had caused a brain injury.  She had to undergo brain surgery, which resulted in an infection where the incision was.  They had to do another surgery, leaving Amanda in a coma once again.  It had been a rough six months, but Amanda never became angry.  Therapists worked diligently with her and she eventually was able to go back home to Glenrock, WY, about 15 miles outside of Casper.

Amanda had no memory of the accident, but her life prior to it was crystal clear.   She now struggled with short term memory loss.  Her family was able to take care of her for a while, but when they discovered NOWCAP Services, they gradually acclimated her into the program, initially bringing her in for day programs just 2-3 days a week.  Amanda was unable to stand independently.  She had virtually no balance and her legs would give.  She used a wheelchair and had to relearn how to take a step, how to talk, tie her shoes and many other skills.

Since beginning services at NOWCAP Services, Amanda has learned to walk with a walker.  She can now carry a conversation and her therapists and doctors are extremely impressed with how far she has come.  She is doing things that were thought to be impossible and the staff at NOWCAP Services are encouraging Amanda to keep moving forward.  Amanda has proven many people wrong with her strong ambition and positive attitude.  Amanda is a very strong person and has been able to overcome many of the obstacles placed in her way.  She keeps smiling and is continuing to improve everyday.  She sees a life of purpose and fulfillment in her future for the first time since she was nineteen.  Amanda sets an excellent example to the individuals in our brain injury program of what it means to persevere.  We’re very proud of her.
Success Story - Erin R.

Erin is a good-humored, educated woman with two children and a love of foreign language and gardening.  Erin’s life, however, dramatically shifted in 2000 when she developed a blood clot and had a stroke.  She was hospitalized for months and endured intense medical treatments, surgeries and rehabilitation in several hospitals and nursing homes.  Her stroke left her without the ability to walk, talk or take care of herself.  She dealt with depression, isolation and loneliness and was unable to spend time with her children.

But, Erin is a survivor.  She has been able to turn what seemed to be a life of hospitals and medical care into a life of friends, family, hobbies and joy.  She has, once again, created a life of her own and NOWCAP Services has been there to help her find her way.  Now Erin lives in her own home where staff are available to assist her 24 hours a day.  She completes daily tasks such as chores and running errands and has also volunteered time to local organizations.  Erin spends time gardening, painting, attending school functions and hosting barbecues for family and friends.  She continues to improve with the assistance of physical and speech therapies and practices her skills at home with the daily support of her staff.

Erin now has hope and sees herself as a person who has things to contribute to her community and family.  Dedicated staff have been through it all to motivate and inspire her during low times and have been there to cheer her on when she has met challenges head on and accomplished her goals.  Erin is grateful for the support she receives through the NOWCAP Services brain injury program.  She wants to have purpose in her life and enjoy what life has to offer her and we’re grateful we are able to help her along her journey.
